April 2023 Assembly Highlights

The April assembly was the primary of its sort for us.
It was the start of a two-part mission to determine a number of shohin-size bushes from three six-foot-tall nursery grown pyracanthas.
The mission started with the efforts of Mike Kelly and Steve Riley who went on a highway journey throughout L.A. and Orange Counties. They scoured nurseries till they discovered the appropriate pyracanthas for the mission, based mostly on Peter Macasieb’s specs.
In addition they collected the soil and rooting pots for the mission.

Peter demonstrated the air-layering course of, and our members proceeded to make the girdling cuts as directed up and down the bushes.
The cuts have been adopted by an utility of root hormone then small plastic pots have been break up to suit across the reduce, wired closed and full of soil.
I didn’t get an actual depend, however we completed roughly 25 air-layers on the three pyracanthas.
Everybody loved the educational expertise, and we look ahead to half two at Peter’s house in July.

Mike Kelly obtained a U-Haul truck to move the pyracanthas so that they have been secured upright with all of the air-layers, and he took them to Peter’s house to await the subsequent step.
Thanks Peter, Mike & Steve!
