The enchanting Chanticleer was value two visits throughout September’s Philadelphia Space Fling tour. I flew in early from Texas with a purpose to spend a complete day exploring Chanticleer, realizing I’d see it once more for just a few hours on Day 2 of the tour. Extra is extra! This was my 4th time to go to Chanticleer, and as normal, I took a bazillion images, which I’m nonetheless modifying down to your viewing pleasure. I’ll share them over the subsequent a number of posts. Take into account it a belated vacation current to you, expensive reader!
Let’s begin with Chanticleer’s Teacup Backyard, which you enter by way of a white-walled courtyard dressed up with clusters of potted vegetation and a tile image of sunflowers.
One of many gardeners reminded my group of the every day bouquets that beautify the restrooms at Chanticleer, so I popped into the women’ room across the nook to see. Attractive!
I additionally admired a tillandsia association on a knotholed tree limb hanging on the wall.
When you step by means of the doorway…
…you uncover the Teacup Backyard’s namesake — the modest and charming teacup fountain. Yearly, the gardeners at Chanticleer change up the planting theme across the fountain. This 12 months, rows of tall bananas made leafy columns on both facet, underplanted with silver and gold vegetation.
The fountain’s mirror-like “cup” spills 4 streams of water right into a round basin.
A wider view
Across the perimeter of the courtyard, richly planted beds dazzle with texture and shade.
Pots add elevation and focal factors.
The teacup fountain was bought in Florence, Italy, by the unique homeowners of Chanticleer, the Rosengartens, in the Twenties.
I loved the fountain backyard from all sides, after which I headed up a brief flight of stairs…
…and seemed again, admiring the jungly impact of the bananas, yuccas, and different daring vegetation towards the prim white home (which comprises administrative workplaces, I imagine).
A wider view
A large grass path runs parallel to the home, flanked by white-flowering borders. I significantly admired the columnar steel trellises spaced alongside the size of this backyard. If I ever had the fitting spot, I’d like to have a welder make one thing comparable.
At one finish of the grass path, a variegated American agave perches in an elevated steel tub, evoking Apollo 11’s lunar lander!
The lengthy view
Coming again round to the home, I used to be intrigued by vines and brown spheres dangling from a balcony railing. I believe these are kokedama moss balls?
An infinite oak anchors a frothy white mattress.
Japanese anemones, considered one of my fall faves
Tucked within the branches of an evergreen, a single robin’s egg by some means nonetheless remained in an deserted chicken’s nest in late September. Is that this actual or a part of the magic of Chanticleer?
A venerable dogwood, simply beginning to blush purple for fall, occupies one nook of the backyard’s decrease courtyard. I imagine that’s a sedge garden however can’t keep in mind for certain.
In a tall blue pot, a variegated ginkgo exhibits off fan-shaped leaves.
Pink and gold
Chanticleer doesn’t put sculptures in its gardens. However its railings, chairs and benches, plant-list containers, and even water fountains are handcrafted artworks. I like this spiral handrail with tree roots and dogwood flowers subsequent to the previous dogwood tree.
A wider view
And now we’re again within the teacup fountain courtyard.
